Personal Finance Taxes on Company Stock Options Search stock thread. Mar 13th, Reply to Thread Reply. Taxes on Company Stock Options I hope someone is kind enough to explain how taxes are applied when one exercises stock options. I tried to read various web sites about the topic and I'm now more confused than ever My work place granted me some stock options in I was allowed to exercise them in Aprilwhich I did. However, what I actually did was convert the options into actual stocks, but I have held on to the stock and haven't sold one single share yet. I know I have to pay tax, but when do the actual stock apply? On my T4, options employment income includes my actual employee income, of course, it options includes the market value minus the strike value of the shares on the day that I exercised the options. I think that's incorrect, but the payroll lady said that's the way it's supposed to be, even though I have not sold anything. On the T4, there are actually two more boxes. Box 38, which is "Stock Option Benefits", and Box 39, which options half of Box 38, "Stock option and options deductions". I am not sure if this is happening to other co-workers, but the ones I have talked to, they have either sold their shares, or can't exercise their shares yet. So, is the payroll lady wrong? Should I go higher up the chain in the company and talk to someone else in Finance? If it is a publicly traded company then you have an income inclusion for the difference between what you paid for the shares and FMV at the time of purchase. The FMV then becomes your stock cost base. When you sell you will have a capital gain or loss for the difference between your selling price and your ACB. An option is an opportunity for an employee to acquire securities. When a qualifying employer grants an option to an employee, the employee's tax situation is not affected until he or she exercises or disposes of the option. If an employee decides to exercise an option and acquire securities at less than their fair market value FMVthe employee will receive a taxable benefit. The taxable benefit is the difference between options fair market value of the shares or options when the employee acquires them and the amount paid or to be paid for stock http: It's a Canadian public company, traded stock the TSX. I guess I mis-understood. There is also the deferral route, but nobody told me about filing an election in writing to defer the benefit. If you have options in the money the best way to go options getting a broker that can sale some of your options before you request a share certificate to your company, so with the money of the sale you can pay company for the exercise and not need to use money from your own stock. This is important because if you exercise your options and have them sitting in your account you are taking the risk that the price drop and then instead of making money you will be losing. If you sale enough shares to cover your exercise at options you are covering your principal and then you pay taxes the same year. Now you will be paying taxes for something that you don't know if will keep its value in the future. I hope this makes sense to you.
